Personally, I hold that people should first know which kinds of people they are before they try to make a decision on such complicated question.

For those who showed gifted talent in some areas at a very year age, it is better for them to just follow their heart and pursue the subjects they like regardless of whether it is a hot subject which leads to better career and reputation. Fortress Besieged is one of the works of a successful Chinese literary scholar and writer,Qian Zhongshu. Had he just felt disappointed about he failing in mathematics and began to try to study a subject like math or physics which he probably would never good at, hardly could he finally have a chance to learn from the most prominent scholars in Tsinghua University and later Oxford, with his genius talent in language. It is just his fondness with books that equips him with the  excellent command of language which earns the admiration of many scholars at that time and even at present.

For those who can master every subject that they put hands on or who just simple have prejudice in a particular subject, it is nicer to try to know the general concepts of every subjects arranged by the university professors. Even though someone do argue that some specific subjects like science,technology.etc would lead to more competitive work, the fact is art and science often both play an invaluable part in ones future career. Had Alexander Fleming had also a good master of the subjects other than science such as marketing, he would probably be a good communicator and orator and thus his finding of Penicillin would very likely given much more attention by his fellow scientist which would possibly make Penicillin for medical use developed years earlier.

In conclusion, there no need for a gifted person to care the subjects which related with more jobs. While for others, they had better to learn every work well as they may use it in the future despite their science related work.
