Unleashing the Power of ICT in African Education: Insights from SchoolNet Projects

1. Introduction

In the 1990s, with the rise of the Internet, there was a vision of using technology to transform education in Africa. The International Development Research Centre’s (IDRC) Acacia program took the lead in this endeavor, starting in 1997 by supporting school networking projects in several African countries. Schools were seen as ideal hubs for community access to Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), as they bring together various community members.

The Acacia program supported SchoolNet projects in nine sub - Saharan African countries during its first three - year phase. These projects varied in s
