Peter是一位生活在德州的50岁美国农夫,经营着从父亲那里继承下来的农场及农机修理店。2015年,他被诊断出患有急性痛风,这迫使他改变饮食习惯并限制酒精摄入,包括他最爱的啤酒。面对疾病和家庭农场的未来不确定性,Peter正努力调整生活方式,同时应对社会角色转变带来的心理压力。
Persona Peter

Peter is a 50 years old American man who lives in Texas. Peter inherited an agricultural farm from his father and ran a repair store for agricultural machines, such as tractors, harvesters, blowers, and grain dryers. After working on the farm and completing repairmen in every week, Peter had been going to “The Steak Restaurant” which is a hot spot in his town. In the restaurant, Peter and his friends eat steaks, drink beer and chat with each other. These days last for twenty years. In 2015, Peter felt pain to his toes and fingertips. Peter was diagnosed with acute gout by a rheumatologist. The doctor told Peter that he must follow strict gout dietary and must take medicine every day. After a month, the pain was gone and Peter went back his routine. However, one week later, Peter’s feet and hands are pain and stiff which causes his inconvenience in mobility. For example, he barely stands up or turns a doorknob. After applied treatment, Peter can complete light labor tasks.

Peter’s sons who live in Dallas, Houston and Atlanta are unwilling to inherit the farm and the repair store. Peter realized that his life will not go back to old days because he must eat gout dietary every day, take medicine every day, depend on his wife to do hard works in farm and shut down his business. The worse thing is poor harvest under the extreme weather in recent years. His wife decided that they will sell the farm and move to Atlanta if they bankrupt in future. Now, Peter is suffering gout and slight depression.

Challenge:
1 Gout dietary refers to avoid high purine foods and follow a low-fructose diet, which is far away from Peter’s habits. The worst thing for Peter is alcohol limitation. He so desires beer because not only he likes drinking, but also he misses the beer-time with his friends.
2 When people mention Texas, the images of cowboys, farms, taverns, and tough guys will appear on people’s mind. Peter thought the same way. He thought that eating less meat and avoid alcohol is not a“Texas style”. When he had a lunch with his friends who ate meat with heavy sauce and drank beer, Peter felt that he standouts from his fellows, because he was eating vegetables or plain food with little meat, and drinking non-alcohol beverage. The situation makes Peter uncomfortable.
3 Even Gout is prevalent, there are not many auxiliary equipment or devices on the market.

Abilities:
1 Peter can use technological devices, smartphone, and the internet.
2 Peter has a strong motivation to ameliorate his condition.
3 Peter’s wife supports Peter and takes care of him.

Goals:
1 To keep Peter away from “Dangerous food”: Technology should provide a suggestion of gout diet and provide alarms when Peter eats “dangerous food”.
2 To make Peter live independently: Technology should provide accessibility which allows Peter to complete simple tasks in everyday life.
3 Prevalent educations: Technology should provide educations for Peter, his family members and his friends about gout disease. And technology should provide information and advice on treatment, prevention, control, and homecare for gout patients and their family members.
