God is Dead


朋友们,今天开始一系列新的谈话:“上帝死了,现在禅是唯一的生活真理。”这是专门给尼采的,他是人类历史上第一个宣布:“上帝死了,人类自由了。”

Dear friends, today marks the beginning of a new series of discussions: “God is dead; Now Zen is the Only Living Truth.” This discourse is dedicated to Nietzsche, the trailblazer who boldly proclaimed, “God is dead, and humanity is liberated.”

这是一句可怕的话,它有很多含义。首先我想讨论尼采的话。

This is a dreadful statement filled with many meanings. First of all, I want to discuss Nietzsche’s statement.

所有的宗教相信神创造了世界,包括人类。但如果你是别的什么创造的,那你只是一个木偶,没有灵魂。而如果你是其他的什么创造的,他可以在任何时候灭掉你。他既不会问你是否想被创造,也将不会问你:“你想被毁灭吗?”

All religions believe God made the world as well as the humankind. But if you are created by someone, you are merely a puppet without your own soul. If you are created by someone, he can ruin you anytime. He will neither ask you whether you want to be created nor ask you whether you want to be ruined.

God will be the biggest dictator, if you accept the myth that God created the world and the humankind. If God is a reality, humans are just slaves or puppets. The rope is in his hand, even your life. Then there is no problem of enlightenment, undoubtedly there is no Buddha, because there is no freedom at all. He hauls the rope, thus you dance. He hauls the rope, thus you cry. He hauls the rope, thus you begin to murder, suicide and battle. You are merely a puppet who is totally manipulated by him.

那么就没有罪恶和美德,没有罪人和圣人。没有好和坏,因为你只是个木偶。木偶不可能对他的行为负责。责任属于有行动自由的人。

Then there are neither crimes nor virtues, neither sinners nor sages, neither good nor bad, because you are just a puppet. How can a puppet be responsible for his behavior! Responsibility is only enjoyed by the person of free behavior.

或者上帝存在,或者自由存在,不可能两者都存在。

Either God or freedom exists. They are impossible to coexist.

那是尼采的话的基本含义:上帝死了,所以人类是自由的。

That is the basic meaning of Nietzsche’s statement: God is dead, so humankind is free.

没有神学家,没有宗教的创立者思考过,如果你接受上帝是创造者,你正在毁掉意识的尊严,自由的尊严,爱的尊严。你带走了所有责任,你也带走了所有自由。你把整个存在减为一个对奇怪的家伙的幻想,他称为上帝。

Neither theologists nor religion founders have considered this: if you accept that God is creator, you are ruining the dignity of consciousness, freedom and love. You take away all responsibilities and all freedoms as well. You have reduced the whole existence into the illusion of a strange fellow, who is called God.

但尼采的话只是硬币的一半。他完全是正确的,但只是硬币的一半。他讲了重要而意味深长的一句话,但他忘了一件事,因为他的话是基于理性,逻辑和理解力。而不是基于静心。

But Nietzsche’s statement is just one half of a coin. He is totally right, but just one half of a coin. He has said an important and meaningful statement, but he forgets one thing, because his statement is not based on meditation but reason, logic and intelligence.

人类是自由的,但为了什么?如果没有上帝而人是自由的,那只是意味着现在人可以干任何事,好的坏的;没有人审判他,没有人原谅他。这样的自由是放肆的。

Humankind is free, but why? If humankind is free without God, it only means that people can do anything good or bad now; no one judges him and no one forgives him. This kind of freedom goes without restraint.

你带走了上帝而给人留下完全的空。当然你宣布他的自由,但目的是什么?他将怎样创造性地,负责地使用他的自由,他将如何避免让自由成为放肆的。

You take away God and leave absolute emptiness to people. When you announce his freedom, but what is your purpose? How can he use his freedom creatively and responsibly? How can he avoid that his freedom goes without restraint.

尼采不知道静心–那是硬币的另一半。人类是自由的,但只有当他是根于静心的时候,他的自由才能成为喜悦和祝福。移走上帝–这很好,他一直是人类自由的最大危险–但给予人类一些意义,一些创造性,一些尊敬和找到他永恒的存在的路。禅是硬币的另一半。

Nietzsche knows nothing of meditation, which is another half of the coin. Humankind is free, but only based on meditation can his freedom can be joy and bliss. Move God away – it is very good because God is the biggest danger to humankind’s freedom – but show humankind some meaning, creativity and respect and the way to find his eternal being. Zen is another half of the coin.

禅没有任何神,那是它的美。

There is no God in Zen, which is its beauty.

但它是转变你的意识的重要的科学,带给你这样多的意识,让你不可能干恶事。它不是来自外面的谴责,它来自你最内在的存在。一旦你知道你存在的中心,一旦你知道你与宇宙的一体–宇宙从未被创造,它一直都在,它将一直都在,永远永远–一旦你知道你灿烂的存在,你隐藏的佛性,犯错误是不可能的,不可能干任何恶事,不可能犯任何罪。

But as an important science to transform your consciousness, it brings you so much consciousness which totally prevents you from doing any evils. It does not result from the outer condemnation but your innermost being. Once you know the center of your being, and once you know you and universe are a whole – universe has never been created, it is always there, and it will be there forever – once you know your brilliant being and your hidden Buddha, it is impossible to make mistakes, to do any evils or to commit any crimes.

尼采在他生命的最后阶段,几乎神经错乱了。他被送入疯人院治疗。这样的一个巨人,他发生了什么?他曾宣称:“上帝死了。”但这是个负向的结论。他空虚了,但他的自由是没有意义的。在里面没有喜悦,因为只是自由于上帝,但为了什么?自由有两面:“从”和“为了”。另一面错过了。那导致神经错乱。

Nietzsche almost suffered mental disorder at the last phase of his life. He was sent to the madhouse for treatment. What happened on such a giant? He ever announced: “God is dead.” But this is a negative conclusion. He became empty, thus his freedom is meaningless. There is no joy in his freedom. Because it is just freed from God, but for what? Freedom has two sides: “from” and “for”. Another side is missed, which leads to his insanity.

空虚总是导致人们神经错乱。你需要大地,你需要中心,你需要与存在的关系。上帝死了,你与存在的所有关系都结束了。上帝死了,你被连根拔起。树不可能没有根生活,你也是。

Emptiness always causes the insanity of people. You need the earth, you need a center, and you need the relation with the existence. God is dead, which ends all your relations with the existence. God is dead, which uproots your life. A tree cannot be alive without root, nor can you.

上帝是不存在的,而这是一个很好的结论。上帝曾被用来填满人们的心灵,虽然是一个谎言。而谎言成千上万次重复,几乎就成了真理。上帝对恐惧的人们是一个巨大的安慰,对过去,死亡,还有将来–未知的黑暗。

God does not exist, which is a very good conclusion. God has ever been used to fill people’s hearts, though it is just a lie. But a lie almost becomes a truth when repeated for thousands and millions of times. God is a huge comfort for those scared people, and for the fear of the unknown darkness from the past, death and future.

上帝曾是巨大的安慰,虽然它是个谎言。

God used to be a huge comfort, though it is a lie.

谎言可以安慰你,你必须理解这个。事实上谎言比真理要甜。

Lies can comfort you, and you must understand this. Actually, lie is sweeter than truth.

As the story goes, Buddha ever said: “Truth is bitter at the beginning but sweet at the end, while lie is opposite.” When lies are revealed, it is very bitter, because you have been deceived by your parents, your teachers, your priests, and your so-called leaders. You have been always deceived. The frustration results in the huge distrust to everyone.

“没有人值得相信……”所以尼采在生命的最后疯了,那是他负向的方法的必然结果。一个知识分子只可能是负向的,他会争论,批评和讽刺,但这不可能给你营养。正向的角度你才能得到营养。所以他失去了上帝,也失去了安慰。他自由了,他也疯了。

“Nobody deserves trust…” so Nietzsche got mad at the last phase of his life, which is inevitable from his negative method. An intellectual can only be negative, who can discuss, criticize and satirize, but cannot be nourished by them. Only positive way can nourish him. Therefore, he lost God and solace as well. He was free, but got mad as well.

而不只是尼采,所以不能说只是偶然的。很多知识巨人呆在疯人院里或者自杀,因为没有人能活在负面的黑暗里。一个人需要光和正向的,肯定的真理的经验。尼采破坏了光明并且在他和追随者内在创造出真空。

Not only Nietzsche suffered such a tragedy, so we cannot say it is only accidental. Many knowledgeable giants stay in madhouses or commit suicide, because nobody can live in the negative darkness. A man is in need of light as well as positive, confirmative and true experiences. Nietzsche ruined the light and created the total emptiness in the inner world of him and his followers.

如果你感到深深的真空,完全没有意义的空,那是因为尼采。西方的整个哲学中:尼采是负向生活的建立者。

If you feel the deep emptiness which is totally meaningless, Nietzsche should be responsible for this. In the whole western philosophy, Nietzsche is a builder of negative life.

前半个世纪的所有巨人都在谈无意义,愤怒,受难,忧虑,恐怖,害怕,焦虑。而这种哲学在西方称为存在主义。它不是,它只是非存在主义。它摧毁了你的一切安慰。

In the former half century, all giants talked about meaninglessness, outrage, suffering, worry, terror, fear and anxiety. This philosophy is called existentialism in the west. But it is not at all but just non-existentialism, which ruins all your solace.

我赞成摧毁因为安慰你的只是谎言。上帝,天堂,地狱–一切都是用来安慰人们的虚构。摧毁它们很好,但却把人们留在了完全的真空中。在这真空中,存在主义诞生了,那就是为什么它总是谈无意义:“生活没有意义。”它谈论无意义:“你只是意外事件。无论你是否在这里对存在都无所谓。”

I approve of ruin because what solaces you is nothing but a lie. God, heaven, hell - all of them are fictions to solace people. It is very good to ruin them, but the people are left in the total emptiness. The existentialism results from this emptiness, thus it always talks about meaninglessness: “Life is meaningless.” It talks about meaninglessness: “You are just an accidental stuff, so it does not matter whether you are here or not.”

而这些人称他们的哲学为存在主义,他们应称之为偶然主义。

While these people call their philosophy existentialism, actually they should call it accidentalism.

你不需要;只是偶然,上帝的木偶,而这些哲学家从尼采到萨特说你是偶然的。

You are not needed. You are just accidental and a puppet of God, while these philosophers from Nietzsche to Sartre all say you are accidental.

然而人非常需要与存在的关联。他需要根于存在,因为只有当他深深地扎根于存在,才会开花为佛,开出成百万的花,生命才不会无意义。那时他的生命将洋溢着意义,祝福。他的生命只是庆祝。

However, a man is in great need of the relation with the existence. He needs to root in the existence. Only when he takes deep root in the existence can he blossom into a Buddha. Only millions of flowers burst into full bloom can life be meaningful. At that time, his life will overflow with significance and blissfulness. His life is nothing but a celebration.

但所谓的存在主义的结论是你是不需要的,你的生命没有意义。存在一点都不需要你!

But the so-called existentialism concludes that you are not needed and your life is meaningless. The existence does not need you at all.

所以我想完成尼采的工作;它还没完成。它会把人类带向疯狂–不只是尼采,而是整个人类。

So I want to finish Nietzsche’s work, which has not been finished yet. His work will lead humankind to insanity - not only Nietzsche but also the whole humankind.

没有上帝你肯定是自由的,但为了什么?你被两手空空的留下了。你以前也是两手空空的,因为你手中充满了谎言。现在你完全意识到你手是空的,而你无处可去。

You are bound to be free without God, but for what? You are left with nothing in your hands. In fact you had nothing before but the lies in your hands. Now you realize you have nothing in your hands and nowhere to go.

我曾听说过一个非常著名的无神论者。他快死了,他妻子拿来他最好的衣服,鞋子,在他快要进棺材前–最好的装束,很可能是无价的。她想跟他好好地说再见,为他送行。他比他这一生都穿得更好。

I have heard a very famous antitheist. He was dying very soon, his wife brought his best clothes and shoes before he was put into the casket - it was his best costume, maybe priceless. She wanted to bid farewell and saw him off. He was dressed better now than anytime in his life.

而朋友们来了,邻居来了。而一个女人说:“哇!他穿得这么好,却没地方可去。”他是个无神论者。所以他不相信上帝,不相信天堂,不相信地狱–没地方可去,却穿得这么好!

His friends and neighbors came. And one woman said: “Ah! He is dressed so well, but no place for him to go.” He is an antitheist, so he has no faith in God, heaven and hell - no place to go, but dressed so well!"

但这就是所有负向的哲学给整个人类的:穿得很好,准备走,却没地方可去!这导致神经错乱。尼采疯了不是偶然的,是他的负向的哲学的原因。所以,我称这个系列:“上帝死了,现在禅是唯一的生活真理。”

But this is what all negative philosophies bring to the whole humankind: Dressed well and ready to go, but nowhere to go. This causes insanity. It is not accidental that Nietzsche got mad, which resulted from his negative philosophy. So I call this series: “God is dead, now Zen is the only living truth.”

我绝对同意尼采对上帝的看法,但我想完成他的话,他所没完成的。他不是一个觉醒的人,他没有成道。

I absolutely approve of Nietzsche’s view on God, but I want to finish his statement which he did not finish. He is not an awakened man of enlightenment.

佛陀也没有上帝,马哈维亚也没有上帝,但他们从来没有疯。

Buddha has no God, so does Mahavia, but they never got mad.

所有的禅师和所有伟大的道的老师–老子,庄子,列子–没有人疯,他们没有上帝。没有天堂,地狱。区别在哪里?为什么佛陀没有疯?

All Buddhist monks and great Taoists - Laozi, Zhuangzi and Liezi - none of them got mad, even they had no God, heaven and hell. What makes the difference? Why did Buddha not get mad?

不仅是佛陀。二十五个世纪中几百个他的人成道,他们甚至没有提到上帝这个词。他们甚至没有说没有上帝。他们不是无神论者。我不是无神论者,也不是有神论者。上帝只是不在,所以没有有神无神的问题。

Not only Buddha but also his disciples who had enlightened in the last twenty-five centuries, they neither spoke of the word “God” nor said there was no God. They were not antitheists. I am neither antitheist nor theist. God is merely in absence, so there is no problem about the existence of God.

而我没有疯,你们可以作证。它没有在我里面创造出真空,相反,没有上帝,我获得了自由的个人的尊严–自由地成为佛陀。那是自由的最后目的。除非你的自由成为你意识的开花,自由的经验把你引向永恒,引向根,引向宇宙和存在,否则你会疯。你的生命会没有意义,无论你做什么都没关系。

While I have not got mad, you can prove it. It has not created vacuum in my inner world. On the contrary, without God, I acquire the free and personal dignity - becomes a Buddha freely, which is the ultimate goal of freedom. Unless your freedom becomes the flowering of your consciousness, the experience of freedom leads you to eternality, root, universe and existence, you will get mad and your life will be meaningless no matter what you do.

根据这些所谓的存在主义者–他们都是尼采的追随者–存在绝对是没有智慧的。他们带走了上帝,所以他们想–根据逻辑它似乎显然是真理–如果没有上帝,存在也就死了,没有智慧,没有生命。上帝曾经是生命,曾经是意识,曾经是意义,曾经是存在的盐。

According to these so-called existentialists - they are all Nietzsche’s followers - Existence is not wise at all. They take God away, so they think - it seems true according to logic - if there is no God, then existence is dead without wisdom or life. God used to be life, consciousness, meaning and the salt of existence.

当上帝不在的时候,整个存在变得没有灵魂,生命只是物质的一个副产品。所以当你死的时候,一切都死了,没有什么留下来。没有好和坏的问题。存在是完全不同的,它不关心你。上帝关心你。一旦拿走上帝,你与存在之间就非常奇怪了。没有关系,存在不关心,不可能关心因为它没有意识。它不是一个智慧的宇宙,只是死的物质,你所知的生命只是一个副产品。

When God is absent, the whole existence has no soul and life is just a byproduct of substance. So when you are dead, all is dead without anything left. There is no problem of being good or bad. Existence is totally different and it does not care you, while God cares you. Once you take God away, it becomes very strange between you and existence. No relationship at all! Existence does not care you. It is impossible to care you because it has no consciousness. It is not a wise universe but dead substance, and the life you know is merely a byproduct.

一旦你知道在正向与负向之间需要一定的平衡时,你在存在中就有根了。

Once you know a certain balance between the positive and the negative is needed, you take root in the existence.

相信上帝是一个极端;不相信上帝是另一个极端;你必须在中间,绝对地平衡。无神论变得无关,有神论也无关。但你的平衡带给你新的光,新的快乐,新的祝福,新的聪明。它不是来自你的头脑,这使你意识到整个存在是非常聪明的。它不仅是活的,而且是有感觉的,聪明的。

It is one extreme to trust in God; it is the other extreme to distrust in God. You must stay in the middle with absolute balance. It has nothing to do with antitheism or theism. But your balance brings you new light, new joy, new bliss and new intelligence. It does not come from your mind, thus you realize the whole existence is very wise, and it is not only alive but also sensible and intelligent.

一旦你知道你的内在是平衡的,寂静的,和平的,突然被思想所封闭的门一下就打开了,整个存在对你变得清楚了。你不是偶然的。存在需要你。没有你存在将错过某些东西,没有人能代替。

Once you know your inner world is balanced, silent and peaceful, suddenly the door, closed by thoughts, is open, and the whole existence is a clear picture before your eyes. You are not accidental and needed by the existence. The existence will miss something without you, and nobody can take the place of you.

那就是给你的尊严,整个存在需要你。星星,太阳,月亮,树,鸟和地球–世界的一切都需要你,这给你巨大的快乐和满足,你与存在是相关的,而存在关心你。一旦你是清晰的,你会看见巨大的爱从四面八方降临你。

That is the dignity given to you, for the whole existence needs you. The stars, sun, moon, trees, birds and earth - all of the world needs you, and this brings you great joy and satisfaction. You are related to the existence and the existence cares you. Once you are clear, you will see immense love will envelop you in all directions.

你是存在最高的发展,如果你成长得更高,超越头脑和它的聪明,到达无头脑,存在将会庆祝:又一个人到达了最终的高峰……

You are the highest development of existence. If you grow so high that you go beyond mind and its intelligence to no-mind, the existence will celebrate: another one has reached the ultimate summit.
