Lesson 11 Not Guilty  [ 2007 - 1 - 9 ]

8. The officer went through the case with great care.

9. All the things i had packed carefully were soon in a dreadful mess.

10. I felt sure i would never be able to close the case again.

11. Suddenly, i saw the officer's face light up

12. He had spotted a tiny bottle at the bottom of my case. and he pounced on it with a delight

13. Perfume is not exempt from import duty.   sarcastically <讽刺地>

14. It's a strange mixture i make myself.  As i expected, he did not believe me.    try it,i said encouragingly  unscrew

15. He was greeted by an unpleasant smile which convinced him i was telling the truth.

16. A few minutes later, i was able to hurry away with precious .. on my baggage.

Lesson 12    Life on a desert island [ 2007-1- 10]

1. What was the exceptional about the two men's stay on the desert island?

2. Most of us have formed an unrealistic picture of life on a desert island.

3. We sometimes imagine the .. to be a sort of paradise with the sun always shines. Ripe fruit falls from the trees.

4. The other side of the picture is quite the opposite. upsite

5. wretched , starve to death, waiting for a boat which never comes.

6. Perhaps there is an element of truth in both these pictures

7. But few of us have had the opportunity to find out. wished they had stayed there longer

8. They were taking a badly damaged boat from a virgin island to .. to have it repaired.

9. There were hardly any trees on the island.  [ lobster ]

10. this did not prove to be a problem.  As one of them put it 'ate like kings'.

11. When the passing tanker rescued them five days later, both man were genuinely sorry that they had to leave.

Lesson 13 It's only me [ 2007 - 1 - 11 ]

1. What did the man expect to find under the stairs.

2. She was too excited to do any housework that morning for in the evening she would be going to a fancy-dress party with her husband

3. She intended to dress up as a ghost, and as she had made her costume the night before, she was impatient to try it on.

4. Though the costume consisted only of a sheet, it was very effective.

5. She wanted to find out whether it would be comfortable to wear.

6. Just as Mrs ,was entering the dining room, there is a knock on the front door.

7. She had told him to come straight in if she ever failed to open the door and to leave the bread on the kichen table.

8. not wanting to frighten the poor man. heavy footsteps in the hall.

9. She tried to explain the situation, saying, it's only me. but it was too late.

10. The man let out a cry and jump back several paces.

11. When ,, walked towards him, he fled slamming the door behind him.

Lesson 14 A Noble Gangster [ 2007 - 1 - 12]

1. How did .. make money in times of peace.

2.  there was a time, pay large sums of  money to the gangsters in return for protection.

3. If the money was not paid promptly, the gangsters would quickly put the man out of business by destroying his shop.

4. Obtaining protection money is not a mordern crime.

5. As long ago as the 14th century, made a remarkable discovery the people would rather pay large sums of money than have their life work destroyed by gangster.

6. with a band of soldiers , settled near Florence. soon made a name for himself, Whenever the Italian city-states were at war with each other.

7. In spite of this, .. regard him as a sort of hero.

8. used to hire his soldiers to princes who were willing to pay the high price he demanded.

Lesson 15 Fifteen pents worth of trouble [ 2007 - 1 - 15 ]

1.  Children always appreciate small gifts of money.

2.  provide a regular supply of pocket money, a source of extra income.

5. Only very thrifty children manage to fill up a money box.

10. stay until the rain stopped.

Lesson 17 The longest suspension bridge in the world [ 2007- 1 - 17 ]

Lesson 18   Electric currents in modern art [ 2007 - 1 - 18 ]

1. Modern sculpture rarely surprises us any more. The idea that.. is mistaken.

2. Even people who take no interest in art can not fail to notice examples ..on display in public places.

3. We have got quite used to them.

4. Some so-called mordern pieces have been on display for nearly 80 years.

5. In spite of this, some people including myself were surprised by a recent exhibition of mordern sculpture.

6. The objects on display were pieces of moving sulpture.

7. oddly shaped forms move in response to a gust of wind, are quite familar to .

8. Lined-up against the wall, there were long thin wires. attached to metal spheres.

9. The spheres had been magnetized and attracted or repelled each other all the time.

10. In the central of the hall, there were a number of tall structures which contained colored lights.

11. These lights flickered continuously like traffic lights which have gone mad.

12. It was rather like an exhibition of prehistoric electronic equipment.

13. These peculiar forms not only seemed  designed to shock people emotionally , but to give them electric shocks as well.

14. How might some of exhibits have been dangerous?

15. art gallery,  Sparks were emitted from small black boxes and red lamps flashed on and off angrily.

Lesson 19 A very dear cat   [ 2007- 1- 19]

1. Why was rusters very dear in more ways than one?

2. Kidnappers are rarely interested in animals. But they recently took considerable interest in Mrs.. 's cat.

11. Considering the amount she paid, he was dear in more ways than one.

Lesson 20 Pioneer pilots [ 2007- 1 - 20]

1. offer a prize of . to the first man who fly across the english channel.

2. Over a year passed before the first attempt was made.

3. He had travelled ony 7 miles across the channel when his engine failed, and he was forced to land on the sea.
