even tell where one begins and the other * ends anymore in only a year or so and * and I am finally * getting passion fruit so these guys at a * grocery store probably two bucks each no * joke I’ve seen them for $4 each in New * York I have hundreds on this tree or on * this bush or on this Vine here whatever * this is It’s like a monster I don’t even * know what to identify it as but this to * me if you can pull off growing passion * fruit it’s probably one of the most * productive Vining structural but edible * plants that you can grow and when * they’re wrinkly like this is roughly * when you wanna harvest them maybe a * touch earlier than is such a good fruit * such a delicious delicious fruit but * that brings us to the pond so the pond * has gone through a lot of changes over * the years my favorite of which is * probably the fact that I can actually * HOH this is gonna explode on me woo * there we go I can actually water * directly from the rainwater sistern so * when I press this lever here there’s a * motor over there a pump that detects * water pressure change and turns on and * then I can fill the pond up if I wanna * or I can water around the surrounding * Pond area with my rainwater so I don’t *
have to have it this on irrigation or * anything like that so the thing that * we’ve really tried to do with the pond * is build it into an actual landscape so * the pond itself looks good we’ve got the * lies right there the koi are massive the * mosquito fish are dancing around in * there but outside of the pond it did not * look so great so we put some salvas in * we put some sort of bunching ground * covers we put a big pride of Madera back * here as well as some canas and some * other sort of grass and to me it’s * brought it back to life now you are * catching it in late summer it doesn’t * look Stellar but it looks a heck of a * lot better than it used to and the thing * about the pond for me is this is a way * to capture even more rain because as I * move over here you can notice that this * Pawn kind of just returns into the * ground it doesn’t look like it’s going * anywhere it looks like it’s disappearing * and that’s because it kind of is * underneath this little Pond patio here * is another 1,500 to 2,000 gallons of * rainwater that been captured over the * years just sitting down there so it’s a * buffer what it does is it keeps the pond * temperature lower in the late fall * through the early spring I don’t have to *
fill the pond up at all because it’s * actually gaining water I have to drain * it a little bit and in the summer of * course with the heat in the surface area * it does evaporate so I have to fill up * maybe 100 gallons a week or somethingGrape Trellis, Epic Test Garden * like that so over here we’ve got kind of * a mixed bag I’ve got a grape trellis on * the wall which most of them I lost * unfortunately to a fungal disease then * I’ve got my classic my tried andrue * lofas I just grew these these on an * A-frame trellis and they are absolutely * prolific these are the shower sponge * plant that I’ve grown so many of there’s * like hundreds sitting in this over here * it’s it’s absolutely insane the big * addition to the homestead this season * was this area right here it doesn’t look * like much right now but this is a 16x 16 * ft grid of 4x4 garden plots so there’s * 16 different 4x4 plots we call this the * Epic test garden and we’ve been running * some of the experiments you’ve seen on * this channel over the course of the * season a potato experiment an onion * experiment a tomato transplant * experiment a buried food scraps *
experiment they’re all running in this * area over the course of the season so * we’ll have even more of those coming out * next year but when I don’t know what to * plant here I just plant more random * stuff like corn so this is another area * of my garden that if you have corn * recipes please let me know cuz I have * hundreds and hundreds of years of corn * to figure out what to do with but to me * this is like the exact reason why I * started epic gardening is to figure out * how things grow how do you make them * grow better does some of the myths that * you think you believe actually work or * not this is where we do a lot of that * testing so if you have an experiment you * think we should try out also please letAsparagus Raised Bed * me know this weird Contraption is just a * frame that we built around a large birdi * bed filled with asparagus and it might * not look like asparagus right now but * that’s because it is in the ferning * stage so in Spring asparagus will start * to pop up and you’ll Harvest some of * those Spears if you if you don’t harvest * the spears they end up looking like this *
and you need them to get to this point * so it’s why in the first couple years of * growing asparagus you tend to not * Harvest it that much because you need to * produce a lot more Spears that Fern out * that produce more energy for those * crowns down below that then produce more * Spears and then after a couple years * that compounding of growth has happened * enough that you can take some Spears for * yourself so we’re in the third year now * once I cut these down in Fall which is * roughly when I’m gonna do it I will * throw some extra Mulch on top they’ll * come out through the winter and then * those new spears will come up in that * fourth season I should have quite a bit * of asparagus to eat so I’m very excited * about that but we built this little * frame with some lanyard because these * ferns tend to sprawl all over the place * and we just wanted a way to keep it in * check and that brings us to the back in * ground Garden which is probably myTomato Patch, In-Ground Garden * favorite part this year so kicking it * off with some Tomatoes now they looked a * lot better earlier in the season this is * actually our second transplant on the * tomatoes that are the indeterminates or *
the Vining style tomatoes because the * other ones died from disease I got a lot * of tomatoes off of them but they just * eventually died so what I like to do * with tomatoes and jacqu on our team he * does the same thing is we do two * successions of tomatoes at least every * single year so this is the second * succession of our Vining style Tomatoes * they’re gonna go straight up this * trellis we’re gonna throw some extra * mulch down and we should get a decent * Harvest not as much as you’d get from * Spring to Summer but you’ll still get a * lot from Summer into fall and then this * sad lot here is my san Marano tomato row * it’s about 18 San Marzano Tomatoes just * on bamboo staks you can see they’re * looking a little bit worse for the wear * but I’ve pulled hundreds of sauce * tomatoes these are the San moros classic * for the Italian tomato sauce so I’m not * too sad about it and I’m just gonna * let these grow even though they look a * little bit bad and take what I can take *
off of them and just let that be now we * get into the inground Garden here in the * backyard which is a lot more ornamental * than it’s ever been here at the Epic * Homestead but of course we still have * some beautiful beautiful Edibles like * this melon I don’t know that I’ve ever * grown a bigger melon than this this * guy’s an absolute monster so we’ll * Harvest that one pretty soon probably * over on the Epic homesteading Channel * which is more of a vlog Channel about me * my life here at the Epic Homestead but I * wanna talk about a couple plants that * I really like this year this one’s * amaranth this is something that I’m * probably gonna be putting in my * garden till the day I’m dead because * look at this I mean this is just a * beautiful variety this is called * burgundy it’s more of a spike style * amaranth I’ve got one back there that’s * love life bleeding that’s a more of the * classic style AMR so you can get a * couple different textures but what we’ve * done this year is we’ve put way more * flowers into the mix so there’s flowers * in the melon patch there’s some flowers * here in my pepper patch which is Far and * Away the most prolific and densely * planted Peppers that I’ve ever had let * me just kind of get in here and and show * you all the different ones I’ve got some * of these guys right here got a really * massive amount of bell peppers right * down there and all sorts of shashido so *
