3 Passes 三遍阅读法
1st pass 略读(5~10min):
- 仔细阅读(carefully):标题、摘要、简介
- title
- abstract
- introduction
- Section & sub-section headings…各章节标题
- Conclusions 结论
- Answer 5 Cs: 回答5个C
- Category 文章的类别
- Context 背景,基础知识
- Correctness 正确性
- Contributions 贡献
- Clarity 清晰度
2nd pass (1 hour): Grasp the content
- ignore details (e.g. proofs) 忽略细节
- jot down the key points 记下一些关键点
- make comments in the margins 在边页上做注释
- Pay special attention to graphs(Error bars?)关注图表、误差条
- Mark relevant unread references 标记相关待读参考文献
- Be able to summarize the main thrust 能够总结文章核心
- If can’t understand, options: 如果不太能明白可以尝试:
- set aside 先搁置不管
- return later 之后再回来看
- persevere and go on to the 3rd pass 坚持进行第三遍阅读
3rd pass 复现式(for beginners, 4-5hours):
- Virtually re-implement
- make the same assumptions as the authors, re-create the work
- identify and challenge every assumption in every statement
- How I would present a particular idea?
- Jot down ideas for future work
- by the end:
- reconstruct the entire structure
- identify its strong and weak points
- pinpoint implicit assumptions, missing citations to relevent work, potrntial issues with experimental or analytical techniques.
Doing a literature survey

Google Scholar, CiteSeer

Well-chosen keywords–3~5 recent papers in the area

Do 1 pass on each, then read their related work sections
- If lucky, an already written survey maybe found.

Websites of the key researchers, their recent publication
