在某些专业应用中，使用不可变的只读文件系统是理想的，甚至是必要的。这可能是因为底层存储介质，例如无法更改的实时 DVD，或嵌入式系统中的闪存，其性能会随着每个周期而下降。不可变文件系统还提供了一种众所周知、定义明确且稳定的状态。重新启动后，始终可以返回到该状态。从技术上讲，只读文件系统映像更像是通过类似 Yocto 构建过程打包一次的随机访问存档。专门为此用例设计的文件系统可以提供高度优化的数据结构和压缩技术。数据和元数据可以预先排序、以最佳方式排列、去重等等。
