It’s time to build privacy into your app stack.

Online scams are rife and a mere three clicks away as any digital native parked in cyberspace will know. Even more so now that the economy is making a downturn, and with plenty of opportunists waiting to liberate unsuspecting victims from their liquid cash.

Within the past few months alone, I was contacted by a friendly impersonator over Facebook messenger, had unauthorised payments made on my Skype account and had an unauthorised login to my Evernote. Troublesome, isn’t it?

Just as you would set up basic security features in your home, the same should be done to protect how we perform functions and transactions online. At the very least, it’s simple cyber hygiene for everyone.

Here are 4 services that I use to enhance my personal security online and that I have found to do the job. Being generally pro-minimalist, I am also aware how this advocates adding more stuff to one’s life, and I get it. Less is more. But for everyone who works and socialises online, security is definitely more in the category of a ‘need’ rather than ‘want’.

By now you would surely have heard about VPN — a virtual private network — that makes your public Internet connection private. It prevents people from tracking your online activity, which is essential if you are on an unsecured public network such as in a library, hotel or airport, and need to perform vulnerable transactions. It is also extremely useful to bypass location-based restrictions such as accessing Netflix Japan to watch all the anime possible, or BBC channels.

While the jury is still out on whether airline companies actually track your search history to increase flight prices, I have personally found that using a VPN has prevented the prices from jumping at every search I make. More than Google’s incognito mode, which by the way, was studied to be not so incognito after all according to this Reader’s Digest article. But this is just my anecdotal take.

Now, choosing the best VPN is a personal choice, but you would definitely want a company that doesn’t keep any logged data on its own servers. I found That One Privacy Guy to have done the ultimate work regarding VPN comparison with privacy education thrown in, so take a look there.

I chose NordVPN, it’s not free, but you get what you pay for. Integrating it into my flow has been seamless and I now barely notice it running in the background.

(Private searching)

Internet users have come to accept the inevitable trade-off between our user data and ads for convenience and results. But there are alternatives, and since they are available, why not use them? I admit, I have not found the perfect browsing solution and in practice, I launch different browsers on my mobile based on different needs because hey, if you can’t beat them, you might as well confuse them? So instead of pointing you to one solution, here are a few that I have found useful beyond Google.

The first alternative service I recommend would be the do-good Ecosia, which plants trees in exchange for your searches. It is based on Microsoft’s Bing and I use Ecosia for music and other fun, aesthetic searches because I get uncommon and unpopular results. Here are my stats:

I planted 20 trees with Ecosia, yay.

But if privacy is your primary concern, your can consider Tor, for the most hardcore anonymity, such as if you have a question you want to know the answer to but don’t want to ever be reminded about asking it.

Just an example.

But what I like about Brave is that I can also use Tor freely in a private window if I need to, and also take part in Brave’s blockchain-based Basic Attention Token (BAT) ad-tech experiment.

The premise of the experiment is that users give up our privacy data in exchange for accessing certain web content. Why not exchange BAT instead? The utility token is based off the Ethereum blockchain and rewards users directly for their attention and you can tip those ads or sites that you like.

Brave (and Tor) also offer additional VPN you can subscribe to but I recommend decoupling the two services as web browsing is not the only activity that you do online.

(Password manager)

Ever wasted time retrieving lost passwords, only to lose it again? I’ve been there and now I use an encrypted password manager to manage all my passwords and I recommend you to do the same.

Not only does a password manager make logging to sites a breeze, it is also more secure because they auto-generate strong passwords for you. I’ve definitely run out of incredible memorable password combinations featuring a capital and small letters, symbols and numbers, so having this feature was a plus for me. They even highlight reused passwords (how my Skype and Evernote accounts were compromised), and remind you when you haven’t updated your passwords in a while, a practice which is highly recommended.

The two big contenders in the space are LastPass (which I use), and 1Password. I use LastPass because they have a free version that works perfectly fine for mine and most personal uses.

It did take a little while to get used to the new habit, but now that a password manager is firmly in my life, I cannot imagine operating without it.

Now, the only password you’ll have to remember is the one that logs onto the password manager.

(Encrypted email)

Ready for the next level in badass personal online security? Use an encrypted email service such as ProtonMail. I am still easing myself into this as porting over to a new email address is akin to moving house. But it’s so far, so good, and I can see myself compartmentalising a portion of my life using an exclusively encrypted email service.

However, sending and receiving encrypted emails will not prevent you from phishing scams so due diligence is still required before you open any suspicious links or give up personal data over email.

If you have read this far, congrats! So here’s an extra tip for you: Always search for promotion codes before you sign up or subscribe to any new service or app. These can usually be found together with a review and can score you savings such as a free month trial or even 25% off.
