News here means reports of recent events that appear in newspapers or on television, radio or the internet

For example:

Celebrities are always in the news.

On the news

The news here is a regular television or radio broadcast of the latest news, it's a TV or radio channel.

For example:

We saw a car accident on the evening news.

Same as 'channel'
