SAP Alert Monitor

The Computing Center Management System (CCMS) contains a monitor with which you can monitor all aspects of your SAP solution. Together with SAP Solution Manager, this forms a complete solution for the continuous monitoring of your system. The monitor offers the following:


->Complete, detailed monitoring (performance indicators) of SAP software components, servers, databases, and third-party (non-SAP) components
->Alert Monitor status indicators (alerts: green, yellow, red) for performance indicators if threshold values are exceeded or not met
->Alert tracking and administration
->Expansion possibilities, thanks to the open structure (also for non-SAP software components)
->Together with SAP Solution Manager, a graphical interface for monitoring and following up on errors


After introducing the Alert Monitor, this section presents concrete recommendations, such as how to adapt the tree in the monitor to suit your SAP solution, organize an escalation procedure (for example, messaging by email or pager), and link the Alert Monitor to the graphical interface of SAP Solution Manager. Used together, these measures define a complete monitoring solution.


Performance indicators

The status of an IT solution is characterized by performance indicators. Performance indicators can be one of the following:

->Counters
For example, average response times, throughput statistics, degree of process workload, or the fill level of memory areas.
->Text information

For example, error messages (an error message "processing of document X has been terminated" is also an indicator of poor performance in a system). In this sense, performance refers not only to runtime performance, but also evaluates availability and error situations.


Key performance indicators

Not all performance indicators are of equal importance in evaluating whether or not your SAP solution is running optimally. As you gain experience, some indicators will emerge as being of particular importance. We refer to these as key performance indicators (KPIs). Therefore, one objective when putting together a monitoring plan is to filter out the KPIs relevant to you from the wealth of information available.
