英语写作中“保存”“保持”“保护”maintain、retain、keep、remain、preserve 的用法

一、这些单词的意义都很丰富，我们只涉及“保存”、“保持”、“保护”这些意思。

二、先从最简单的keep说起，keep对理解其他单词很有帮助。

（1）keep的意思之一是“保留”“保存”，例句：

Tom picked up a shell on the beach and kept it.（Tom在海滩上捡到一只贝壳，他保存了起来。）

He gave the doll back to her. But she said that he could keep it.（他把玩偶还给她，可她说他可以留下来。）

 He’s kept this piece of Roman pottery for a long time.（他保存了这件罗马陶瓷很长时间。）

He kept the coin in the jar.（他把硬币保存在罐子里。）

（2）keep的另一个意思是“保持”——保持联系、安静、平衡、暖和等日常生活状态，例如：

They keep in touch since graduation.（大学毕业后他们一直保持联系。）

She kept silence in class.（上课是她不发言。）

to keep balance/warm 等。

为了行文典雅，建议用maintain 代替keep ，例如maintain contact(silence)(balance)(warmth)……

三、preserve 主要有两个意思，（1）“保存”，指保存以保留品质，例如：Refrigerators are used to preserve food.（冰箱用于保存食品。）这里顺便提一下preserve 与conserve的“保存”的区别，preserve 主要是保护品质，而conserve是储存起来以备后用。

（2）preserve 的另一意思是“保护”，主要通过细心保存、使用、或采取适当措施保护隐私、名声、和平、文化、牙齿、身体等免于损坏、腐烂、生病， 例如：
We need to preserve our cultural heritage.（我们需要保护文化遗产。）

In the network, preserving privacy is a critical issue that’s needed to be addressed.（网络上，保护隐私是需要解决的问题）

注意，protect的“保护”一般是指通过手段。有时候当保护手段不是那么激烈时preserve 与protect 可以互换，例如：to preserve/protect privacy(teeth)……

四、retain是正式用语，主要有两个意思，一与keep的“保存”、“保留”同义，例如：

The user retains the private key in secret and renders the corresponding public key public.（同户秘密保存好私钥，并将公钥公开。）

retain 还与preserve的“保护”同义，例如：

As for a university, buildings are part of its tradition and culture. So retaining buildings is of significance for retaining the tradition and culture of the university.（对于大学来说，建筑物是传统和文化的一部分，所以保护建筑物对保护大学的文化传统很有意义。）

五、maintain 指保持某一方面（与keep同义）、或某一方面的特点，只接名词。例如保持某一方面maintain a relationship(contact)(influence)……

China maintains a good investment environment.（中国保持了好的投资环境。）

保持某一方面的特点，例句：

People maintain high standards of living for a long time.（很长时间以来，人们保持高标准生活。）

The system maintains comparatively high performance due to proper maintenance.（因为正确的维护，系统保持了相当高的性能。）

The server will maintain relatively strong security by using user authentication.（通过用户认证，服务器将保持相当高的安全性。）

maintain 还有一个用法“坚持”，与insist 同义，例如：

The author maintained that digital currency won't take the place of ordinary currency.（作者坚持认为数字货币不会取代普通货币。）

He maintains plausibility of the plan.（他坚持认为计划的合理性。）

六、remain的意思是“保持”，指保持状态，它的合适翻译是“仍然”、“仍然是”，例如：remain unchanged （仍然未解决），例句：

Discrete logarithm remains an intractable problem.（离散对数仍然是个难解问题。）

Security of the system remains a key issue that users concern about.（系统安全仍然是用户关心的关键问题。）
