How to install PicOS in Edgecore-5712-54X

Edgecore AS5712-54X switch provides high availability features required for datacenter operation including redundant hot-swappable AC or 48 VDC PSUs or 12VDC power input, fan with 4+1 redundant fan modules and port-to-power or power-to-port airflow options. AS5712-54X is an ideal Top-of-Rack switch for virtualized datacenters with its support of VxLAN AND NVGRE tunneling functions in hardware. AS5712 is preloaded with Open Network Install Environment (ONIE) for automated loading of compatible open source and commercial network operation system (NOS) such as PicOS, Cumulus Linux, Big Cloud Fabric, Open Network Linux, OpenSwitch, FlexSwitch and Open Netvisor Linux. In this article, we will show how to install PicOS in Edgecore AS5712-54X.

Step: preparation. Set up a tftp server and download the latest OS installer from http://www.pica8.com/picos-downloads/ according to the switch model. (You need your username and password to download PicOS).

Step 2: Copy the PicOS file (onie-installer-x86-accton_as5712_54x-picos-2.8.1-f2806cd.bin) to root directory of your tftp server (e.g. ip: 192.168.10.5), then type the following command for later use:
onie-nos-install tftp://192.168.10.5/onie-installer-x86-accton_as5712_54x-picos-2.8.1-f2806cd.bin

Step 3: Use PuTTY to log in the switch via serial port with these configuration:11520 bps, 8 characters, no parity, one stop bit, 8 data bits, and no flow control.

Step 4: Connect the switch Mgmt port to the same subnet as tftp server, and make sure the Mgmt port is given a valid ip address. The switch will try to obtain an ip address from DHCP after starting up. You can also set up an ip address by yourself, but make sure the ip is in the same subnet as the tftp server.

Step 5: Power on the switch, you can see the figure below in PuTTY. Select ONIE Rescue mode.

Step 6: Copy the command in Step 2 and paste it in PuTTY, the switch will start to load the PicOS from tftp server and install it after verification.

Step 7: After you have install PicOS, you need to install a valid license to the switch, you can use command (license -s) to show the license information.

To install a license, you need to generate one using the Hardware ID of the switch.
a) Login http://license.pica8.com/, and go to “New Switch License” and input the information required, then click Add.

b) Back to Home page, you will see the generated License Key associated with the switch Hardware ID. Download the License file and save it into the root directory of your tftp server.

c) use the tftp command (tftp 192.168.10.5 -c get license.lic) to load the license file to the switch (path: /etc/picos)

d) use command (sudo license -i license.lic) to install the license file.

Step 8: Reboot the switch and all done.
