How to Recover a Linux Server Using 1-Touch
This document will cover the process to recover a Linux server by using 1-TOUCH for Linux with CommVault Software Version 8.0. This document should in no way be treated as the “End All” procedure. It is merely provided as a template on how this process can be accomplished.
The client that will be recovered in this example is:
mysqllnx.commvault.net running Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.4 (Tikanga) i386
hplnx01.commvault.net 1-Touch Server where the boot.iso will be restore to
Resolution:
To recover a system using 1-Touch
Caveats
1-Touch for Linux cannot restore to a different computer whose hardware configuration is dissimilar to that of the original computer. If you are restoring to a different computer that has the same hardware configuration as the original computer, you must manually configure the network interface card (NIC) when the computer comes up after the first reboot. Once the NIC is configured, you should reboot to allow the second phase of the 1-Touch recovery to complete successfully.
1-Touch for AIX, 1-Touch for Linux, 1-Touch for Solaris, and 1-Touch for Windows do not support Single Sign On. So please ensure that you have an account configured in you CommCell that does not use SSO
- In the CommCell Browser, right click on the backup set, which contains the 1-Touch Recovery enabled subclient, and select 1-Touch Recovery.
- This will bring up the submit 1-Touch Recovery Request and you need to select a backup job that is used to create the boot.iso to rebuild the operating system. After picking a backup job click next.
- In the select Recovery jobs, select restore data from latest backup or restore data from backup that occurred before this date. In this scenario we will restore data that was backed up before 10/08/2009 11:45 PM
- The following files reside on the client belonging to user01:

- Click on Finish to submit the 1-Rouch Recovery Request.
In the CommCell Console you will see a 1 Touch Restore job that will create the boot.iso on the 1-Touch server configured for this subclient.
- Burn the Linux boot CD using the bootable ISO image that was restored to the 1-Touch Server. The boot.iso in this case is restored to: /export/1touch/mysqllnx/bootcd.iso
- Boot the client using the Linux boot CD.
- Decide whether you want to interactively administer disk and file system restores and therefore provide more flexibility for the recovery. If so, type or accept the y default, press Enter and go to the next section in this procedure. If not, type n, press Enter and exit this procedure.
For each of the following interactive tasks that you choose to complete, 1-Touch performs the task per the details saved during the 1-Touch backup. For each of the following tasks that you choose not to complete, an automated recovery of the affected component will occur.
Partition Disks
- If you want to partition specified disks, accept the y default, press Enter and go to the next step; if not, type n, press Enter and go to the next section in this procedure.
- The path for a disk is displayed. If you want to partition this specific disk, accept the y default and press Enter; if not, type n and press Enter. If you choose to partition the disk, the appropriate messages are displayed.
- Repeat the previous step for each disk until all disks are accounted for. Then go to the next section in this procedure.
Restore Physical Volumes
- If you want to restore specified physical volumes, accept the y default, press Enter and go to the next step; if not, type n, press Enter and go to the next section in this procedure. Note that the physical volumes on any disk that you chose not to partition in the previous section will not be eligible for restore.
- The path for a physical volume on a disk is displayed. If you want to restore this physical volume, accept the y default and press Enter; if not, type n and press Enter. If you choose to restore the physical volume, the appropriate messages are displayed.
- Repeat the previous step for each physical volume per disk until all the volumes are accounted for. Then go to the next section in this procedure.
Restore Volume Groups
- If you want to restore specified volume groups, accept the y default, press Enter and go to the next step; if not, type n, press Enter and go to the next section in this procedure.
- A volume group is displayed. If you want to restore this volume group, accept the y default and press Enter; if not, type n and press Enter. If you choose to restore the volume group, the appropriate messages are displayed.
- Repeat the previous step for each physical volume group until all the volume groups are accounted for. Then go to the next section in this procedure.
Restore File Systems
- If you want to restore file systems, accept the y default, press Enter and go to the next step; if not, type n, press Enter and exit this procedure.
- A file system is displayed. To restore file systems interactively, you must restore at least the "/" file system as a matter of course. Therefore, if the "/" file system is displayed, accept the y default and press Enter. If another file system is displayed and you want to restore it, accept the y default and press Enter; if not, type n and press Enter. If you choose to restore the file system, the appropriate messages are displayed.
- Repeat the previous step for each file system until all the file systems are accounted for.
Once you complete this procedure, the appropriate actions leading to a system reboot are completed. Once the reboot takes place, the services should be up in the system, and the product software should start a full data command line restore. Once this restore is completed, the system should be completely recovered.
Checking the files that have been restored for user01;
-bash-3.2# ls -l /home/user01/ | sort
