如何编译linux内核？

今天打开虚拟机上的linux系统，发现上回的新内核（2.6.22）编译还没有完成。
出现的问题如下：

mount  :could  not  find  filesystem  '/dev/root'
setup  root:  moving  /dev  failed  :No  sech  file  or  directory
setup  root:  error  mounting  /proc  :  No  such  file  or  directory
switchroot:mount  failed:No  such  file  or  directory  
kernel panic -not syscing:Attempted to kill init!

然后换成老的内核启动还是可以的，网上找了些资料，好像说新版内核编译有点不同。
不知道有没有高手可以解决一下。
不知道该如何解决这个问题。
