微软通过Carbon Grove平台发起一项环保活动，参与者可通过减少碳排放的行为种植虚拟树木，并在六周后由微软代为种植真实树木以支持其环保承诺。预计一年内种植的25万辆树木能吸收等同于行驶10,842,000英里汽车产生的二氧化碳。

“The way we determine how many trees to plant is: look at the number of people who go to Carbon Grove, plant a virtual tree, and go back to see it grow six times,” he said. “The point of each visit is to say ‘you’re doing the things you committed to do to help the environment and to see your virtual tree growing.’ By the sixth week we figure you’re essentially going to keep doing them. At that point, Microsoft and Internet Explorer will plant a real tree with American Forest to support your commitment.”

The real trees then remove carbon from the air. Over a year, Microsoft’s 250,000 trees will filter out the carbon dioxide created from 10,842,000 miles of automobile travel. They will simultaneously provide enough oxygen for 125,000 people.
