Additive Manufacturing : Scaling adoption to support decarbonization and enable greater sustainability

The additive manufacturing (AM) industry has progressed a long way since the first rapid prototyping machines were invented with the launch of stereolithography and filament deposition method (FDM) 3D printers more than three decades ago. This talk will provide an overview of the state of the industry and industrialization journey, how it has progressed from rapid prototyping applications to playing an increasingly pivotal role as a manufacturing process enabling new product design paradigms and a wide spectrum of new emerging applications. As the green energy transition and decarbonization effort gather pace globally, developing more sustainable ways of production through circular design, resource efficiency and distributed manufacturing enabled by AM has become paramount. Despite the undoubted value proposition of AM technology being a more sustainable production method over traditional manufacturing using subtractive or formative methods, there remains formidable barriers to its adoption for mass manufacturing. For AM to establish itself as a viable method in modern manufacturing augmenting traditional manufacturing processes, the need for the industry to collaborate becomes paramount. This is especially needed in developing material specifications and technical references towards industry-driven standards in AM process qualification methodology - moving from part-based qualification, supported by the incorporation of digital process models. This will enable scalability and create confidence for increased end-use adoption through the reduction in AM part qualification and certification cost, lowering one of the barriers for the AM community to scale adoption.

个人简介

Dr HO Chaw Sing is the CEO of NAMIC, a national accelerator he co-founded that focuses on translational research to catalyse and scale industrial adoption of digital additive manufacturing technologies. In this role, he overseas Singapore’s development and implementation of additive manufacturing (AM) Research Innovation and Enterprise (RIE) strategies. Before joining the public sector, he spent 16 years at HP and Globalfoundries. Chaw Sing is an ASTM International board member and serves as an Adjunct Professor at NUS College of Design and Engineering. Active in the global AM community, he oversees the Chair’s Advisory Group in ISO’s AM standards committee as well as Singapore’s AM Technical Committee. He is an advisor to startups and public R&D organizations including the Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise under the National Research Foundation and Singapore Maritime Institute, among others. He earned his doctorate and undergraduate degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from NUS.
