It appears that Flickr has been blocked in some areas of China. While users in some areas of China can still access the site, they cannot view any images.
Flickr has responded on its blog by noting that the technical staff has looked into the issue and has determined that the problem is not due to a technical issue on its end, and has seemingly kept a watchful eye on the situation. So it looks like Flickr hasn’t heard from the Chinese government on any bans for Flickr, and that leaves a lot to be desired. This all increases the amount of speculation surrounding bans in areas of China, and a lot of debate surrounding free speech.
With Flickr’s initial penetration into the Chinese market, there didn’t seem to be many changes that the photo-sharing site would have to make in order to launch Flickr in China, aside from the soft porn the site is known for. Flickr initiated several security measures for Flickr users in the past few months, surely in response to complaints from users and in preparation for global expansion.
