No 1 Bligh Street, Sydney, is a recently completed signature office tower in Sydney's CBD and sets new standards for sustainability and innovation for high-rise development in Australia. This paper describes some of the special steel structures of the roof and facades. One of the key internal features is a full-height internal atrium which rises from ground up through 30 storeys. The atrium roof features a slender domed lattice structure which spans approximately 25m over a heart-shaped opening, with a rise of 1.5m. This type of triangulated structure is very light and rigid and therefore efficient, but would usually require a large number of differently shaped triangular panels. In this case however, the form of the roof geometry was derived by an innovative form-finding process that optimised not only the overall surface shape, but also the layout and alignment of the panels. As a result, this irregular roof dome was clad with triangular panels of a single typical size. At roof level, a dramatic cantilevered perimeter glazed wall provides shelter to the roof garden. The base of the building features a child-care centre enclosed by an unusual tensioned stainless-steel mesh of interlocking rings, stretched between ground and first level floors. An elegant curved steel staircase rises around the childcare centre. Great care was given to the detailing of the central tubular stringer, and to the analysis of its response under footfall impacts from occupants walking.
