Electronic health records (EHRs) are winning some enthusiastic converts among physical therapists. "The transition from paper to electronic was phenomenal. I can't imagine going back," says Alan Petrazzi, PT, MPT, MPM, rehabilitation director at Pittsburgh Healthcare Systems VA hospital. "With only one [paper] chart per patient we'd be jockeying for the chart, asking 'Who has it--nurse, social worker, physician?' With the VA's electronic system, we all can access the chart remotely at the same time. We can update treatment notes and get a physician's signature in minutes."
