Presentations by ISC representatives will describe the new opportunities that have been created for geospatial visualization and analysis by recent changes in the industry. Specifically, they will examine the impact that consumer map services including Microsoft Virtual Earth™ and Google Maps™ have had on the demand for advances in geospatial visualization and analysis.

Benton Belcher will present “Hybrid GIS - Consumer-based Mapping and a GIS” at 10:00am on Tuesday, April 21st. This presentation will focus on the next level of spatial data visualization, analysis and management using Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and Silverlight 2.0. Having seen the integration of consumer-based mapping services with GIS for over two years, Mr. Belcher will focus on how .NET developers can build rich smart client and Web applications with Microsoft's newest presentation technologies. Using these technologies, we'll focus on the importance of vector tile overlays in dynamic thematic mapping, controlling tile cache sizes, and decreasing server load.

Hybrid GIS - Consumer-based Mapping and a GIS

Mark Alexander of ISC will present “Hybrid GIS” at 1:00pm on Wednesday, April 22nd. From mashups to Enterprise GIS, the GeoWeb is making an impact. Geospatial user communities that include government agencies and utilities have explored the application of online mapping services created to address the consumer market. Hybrid GIS is the merging of traditional geographic information systems with the new products and services of the GeoWeb. This discussion will explore various forms of Hybrid GIS and the practical application and implementation of these architectures.

The new concepts that consumer map services have introduced to the GIS professional bring with them new issues for geospatial visualization and analysis. Prominent among these new concepts is tile based mapping. Tile based mapping systems can provide a much richer user experience over demand-driven, non-tiled map visualization, but they also introduce new obstacles and complexities. While at the GITA conference, attend one of these sessions to learn more about tile based mapping and other new concepts.
