Lesson 25 Do the English speak English?

I arrived London at last. The railway station was big, black and dark. I did not know the way to my hotel, so I asked a porter. I not only spoke English very carefully, but very clearly as well. The porter, however, counld not understand me. I repeated my question several times and at last he understood. He answered me, but he spoke neither slowly nor clearly. 'I am a foreigner,' I said. Then he spoke slowly, but I counld not understand him. My teacher never spoke English like that! The porter and I looked at each other and smiled. Then he said something and I understood it. "You will soon learn English!" he said. I wonder. In England, each person speaks a different language. The English understand each other, but I don't understand them! Do they speak English?

1. or: 或者，否则
   • Harry up, you will be late.

2. but:连词

   however:adv.

   but可以连接两个句子，而however用在句号后面，单独成句，与前面的句子只有意思上的承接，没有语法上的承接，语法上的承接表转折只能用but。

3. both...and...:不但……而且……

4. either...nor...:要么……要么……

5. yet: 然而
   1. adv. Have you finished yet?
   2. = but. 放在两个句子中间，起转折作用。

6. neither...nor...:不……不……

   eg: Neither you nor I go.

7. not only...but...as well: 不但……而且…… = not only...but also...

8. railway: n. 铁路 = railroad. eg: Railway station: 火车站

9. several: 几个 只能修饰可数名词 = a number of

   a great number of: 大量的

10. some time: 一段时间

    sometime: 某时 I will defeat you sometime.

    sometimes: 有时

    some times: 不存在这种说法

    several times: 许多次

11. wonder:
    1. 奇观 It's a wonder.
    2. wonderful: 极好的
    3. v. 感到奇怪 wonder at sth.

    4. = want to know: 想要知道

    5. I wonder + 从句

       间接引语的疑问句：一般疑问句用if引导，特殊疑问句用特殊疑问词引导。

       eg:

       I wonder if you have any sapre time?

       I wonder what time it is?

       所有的从句都是用陈述句语序:主语在动词前面

       I wonder why you are late.

       I wonder where you're going.

       I wondered where you were going.

       I wondered how to get there.

    6. no wonder: 难怪

12. arrive: vi. 到达
    • ~ in (大)
    • ~ at (小)

    I arrived at last.
    When will you arrive in China?

    reach: vt.

    When will you reach China?

    get to: 到达

    When will you get to China?

    get home, get there. home/there 都是副词， adv.跟动词连用不需要加介词。

13. black: 颜色黑

    dark: without light

14. know sth. well: 很熟悉

15. not only...but...as well: 什么东西并列连接什么

    I can speak English, I can speak Chinese.

    I can speak not only English but Chinese as well.

    I not only sing but also dance as well.

    Not only you but also I will go there.更常使用Both...and...

    not only 喜欢放在动词前面

    I can not only speak English but Chinese as well.

16. 既不……也不……

    I speak neither Janpanese nor English.

17. soon: 表示时间上的快

    You will soon learen English.

18. It was not until then that I came to know that the earth moves around the sun.

    It was that表示强调

    I did not come to konw that the earth moves around the sun until then.

    • His father did not leave until he returned home.

      -> It was not until he returned home that his father left.

    • I did not get up until lunch time.

      -> It was not until lunch time that I get up.

19. 连接主语的情况

    • Both...and:谓语用复数

      Both you and I are good student.

    • 当主语由neither...nor, either...nor, not only...but also 或 or 连接时，谓语动词采用就近原则

      Neither he nor I am going to the airport.

      Not only Mary but alose her sisters have new clothes.
