As a 23-year-old teacher only a year out of college, I don’t really consider myself a very tech-savvy person. I know how to use a computer as well as navigate a good portion of the Internet. I’m quickly learning how to use InDesign. I picked up online platforms pretty quickly for virtual learning, like Google Classroom and Zoom. I’ve been using Google resources like Docs, Forms, Slides, and Sheets for a long time, so it came intuitively to me.

However, that wasn’t the perception some people had. Last year, one day, one of the older teachers I had a great relationship with caught me as I was leaving the school building and asked if I could help her with some of the tech problems she was having. She needed help setting up her Smartboard, connecting her desktop to the projector, and using an HDMI splitter so she could use her computer and have a projection onto the Smartboard simultaneously.

Again, I’m not a tech wizard by any stretch. But we didn’t have an IT guy, per se, and any ticket we put into the IT Department could take a pretty long time to process. The older teacher needed to use her projector tomorrow. I remember that all I did was plug in an HDMI and VGA cord and her computer screen started showing on the projector.

Going to college recently and being young, I had to do these kinds of things daily, and I was somewhat surprised, so many of my colleagues didn’t know how to use Google Docs, plug in an HDMI cord, or how to mute themselves on Zoom.

I’m not a wiz by any stretch, but I feel like I have a firm grasp of the basics. The most significant advantage I have in the new tech-centered world of education is my age.

But this is the world we live in right now, and I frequently hear from other teachers anxiety and trepidation to experiment with new digital platforms. Keeping a growth mindset and recognizing that you’re also a student and learning has been necessary. I learn something new every single day. Just yesterday, I learned how to access a critical resource I didn’t know about my entire first year to find my curriculum. If you don’t adapt, you’ll never grow.

As a teacher, I have never understood the pettiness that many teachers feel towards each other, like disapproval of someone else’s classroom management strategy or an unwillingness to work with someone. Teaching is hard enough alone. Collaboration makes it much more manageable. Everyone has a strength — while I was better at technology, my older colleagues who had 25 to 30 years of teaching experience were better in the classroom and executing good lessons.

After all, we are all in this together. That’s why I never minded being the unofficial IT guy at my old school. Having good relationships with your colleagues has always been a deal-breaker in every job I’ve worked in. After all, you’re going to spend a lot of time working with other teachers. You want them to have your back, and you want to have their back in return. For that reason, I have always avoided petty politics and drama in the workplace. I have seen firsthand, at every school, how much politics there is, and while I understand it, I want nothing to do with it.

But back to learning technology in the digital learning space. One Twitter use, Nyla Danae, tweeted to remind us to have more patience and empathy for older teachers. Her father, a 53-year-old teacher, calls her every day to practice with new technology to teach online effectively:
