Suppose you put Google Test in directory ${GTEST_DIR}

g++ -I${GTEST_DIR}/include -I${GTEST_DIR} -c ${GTEST_DIR}/src/gtest-all.cc
ar -rv libgtest.a gtest-all.o

File in gtest-1.6.0/make You should have Makefile see below how should it look. Difference is on last line

# A sample Makefile for building Google Test and using it in user
# tests.  Please tweak it to suit your environment and project.  You
# may want to move it to your project's root directory.
