Dear all,
I fought the same problem with my new Dell E6400 notebook! The problem is that when you update the driver to the MS driver, it will be automatically reversed to the Broadcom driver!! When you remove the Widcomm software, no more bluetooth devices are available - even when you search in the device manager!!
After reading lots of posts, I came to a solution for the reversing to the Brodcom driver. Perhaps not the best way, but it works without any problems.
The best thing is, that you do not have to damage any drivers/software and that you can return to the Broadcom driver on any time....
Here are the steps I did:
1. Install Dell Bluetooth Software, DO NOT START (CONFIGURE) IT AFTER INSTALLATION
2. add a line into the C:/Windows/inf/bth.inf.
...First, call Device Manager" (execute Devmgmt.msc).
Edit properties of your bluetooth key.
Find the manufacturer and find the identifier like USB/Vid_xxxx&Pid_xxxx
Then, edit with notepad C:/Windows/inf/bth.inf
In the bluetooth section of your manufacturer, add this line :
[MyManufacturer.5.1]
MyBlueTooth Key= BthUsb,USB/Vid_xxxx&Pid_xxxx
[for E6400: Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Module= BthUsb, VID_xxxx&PID_XXXX]
Save your file with same name.
3. Goto Task Manager and kill processes: "BTSTAC~1.EXE" and "BTTray.exe"
4. Rename the 2 Files "btwsecfl.sys" and "btwusb.sys" in C:/Windows/System32/Drivers to .../.../btwsecfl.sys.WIDCOMM and .../.../btwusb.sys.WIDCOMM
5. Remove Link "BTTray" from Startup Folder
6. Change to XP Bluetooth driver
...Find the BT device in the device manager;
...Click update driver, Install from a list or specific location, Don't search - I will choose the driver to install.
...A list with two drivers appears. The first (signed) is the Widcomm driver, the second (unsigned) is the Microsoft driver. Choose Microsoft.
...A new enumerator is found as well, choose Microsoft again.
7. Rename Folder C:/Program Files/WIDCOMM/Bluetooth Software in .../.../WIDCOMM/Bluetooth Software.KEEPME
8. Create following folder: "C:/Program Files/WIDCOMM/Bluetooth Software" and a subfolder in it called "bin"
9. Copy file "C:/Program Files/WIDCOMM/Bluetooth Software.KEEPME/bin/btwdins.exe" to "C:/Program Files/WIDCOMM/Bluetooth Software/bin/btwdins.exe"
--> if you don´t copy this file into the specified path, the Bluetooth Service will not be able to start again after a reboot!
12. Navigate to Control Panel --> Network and Internet Connections --> Bluetooth Devices --> Tab "Options" and activate the ceckbox "Show the Bluetooth icon in the notification area"
11. Start PC Suite, select phone, pair, authenticate, sync, done.
NO removes, NO restarts needed!!! :-)
BEWARE: Do NOT uninstall the Widcomm Software before or after that operation or you will not have a bluetooth device in the device manager any more!!
Hope this HowTo helps all others out there!!! ;-)
I also gave this information to Dell Support - hopefully they can also help others...
Enjoy,
MrMister76
