1. The Ambivalence Towards Rules
Rules often evoke mixed feelings. We may view them as restrictive, an affront to our sense of agency and pride in charting our own lives. The story of Moses and the golden calf in the Bible illustrates this. When Moses returned with the Ten Commandments, the Israelites, who had long been under strict regulations, were in a state of revelry. They initially celebrated the reduction from fifteen to ten commandments but were less enthusiastic about the continued prohibition of adultery. This shows our ambivalence about rules, even when we know they are beneficial.
