LAS VEGAS — IBM announced a new chapter in its partnership with Johnson Controls that extends its “smarter planet” campaign beyond IT data centers and into the building structures that house business systems and factory floor equipment.
The duo will integrate IBM’s Tivoli information management and Maximo asset management applications with Johnson Controls’ Metasys building automation and control system to help companies improve operations and reduce energy and water consumption. This builds on a relationship the two companies formed in 2007 to create energy-efficient data centers. The new Smart Building solution adds advanced intelligence capabilities to improve building operations, the companies said.
“Our software with theirs will increase te energy efficiency of buildings and drive between 10 to 20% energy savings across an organization,” said Al Zollar, general manager of IBM’s Tivoli software during a press conference at the IBM Pulse 2010 service management event.
IBM’s integrated service management platform provides a dashboard to see across asset classes, Zollar said. Johnson Controls adds integration of business systems, building systems, and smart grid technologies. In addition to energy and emissions management capabilities, the solution includes space optimization tools to better identify underused real estate, which can help in decisions on relocations or footprint consolidation.
The move is the latest development from IBM’s Green Sigma Coalition, an alliance of vendors that provide smart solutions for energy, water, waste, and greenhouse gas management. Charter members of the coalition include ABB, Cisco, Eaton, ESS, Honeywell Building Solutions, Johnson Controls, Siemens Building Technologies Division, SAP, and Schneider Electric.
