Learning English and successfully mastering it is kind of like building a fire to boil a hotpot of water. You cannot force the water to boil or you can control is how much wood you add to keep the flames alive. I really like this analogy. Let me break it down for you.
In the beginning, learning English can feel like you are adding endless amounts of wood to the fire. But there is no sign of boiling. It is very frustrating and a lot of people tend to give up before they reach a threshold. But there is this thing called a critical point.
Basically, you're not going to see any huge progress for a while, but you got to keep feeding the fire. Slowly but surely the temperature rises and then one day boom. You're going to see the water boiling.
So it all comes down to perseverance in English terms, that means your output start to take off. Your speaking and your writing starts to take off. But what is the wood in this analogy? This wood means that all of your input practises, including your reading and your listening hours. You really need to higher all those hours in before you can see any major noticeable progress.
At first you feel like you are throwing in a ton of wood with not much to show for it. You cannot control how fast you're going to boil your water. You can also cannot control how fast you can learn English. But what you can control is how much what you consistently add to the fire. So you got to keep feeding the fire so that it reaches this threshold, so that it reaches this critical point, and the good news is once you hit that critical point, you are not frantically throwing in all those wood anymore. The fire starts to burn on its own. And that's where most of the fun of English learning lies. You are effortlessly trying to master English and that's how you really start to reap all the benefits. It's like reach our point where language starts to drive by itself.
You stop struggling and English becomes a part of your daily life. So what is the takeaway? Don't obsess over the fires. Don't stress about boiling the water. You just need to keep adding the fires. You just need to constantly engage with the content. Just add more listening, add more reading, adding more active vocabularies to your brain and eventually you will find that the whole process starts to propel itself forward without you having to work so hard, and that's when you become successful.
And the final good news is, once the water starts to boil, you can cook up basically anything you want. You can stop learning English, but instead you can use English to learn whatever excites you, to learn whatever engages you. And that's where most people can really get their times spent on learning this English. So if you like this analogy, make sure that you follow my content. I'll see you next time.
