是地理条件注定的吗?

雷德·戴蒙德(JaredDiamond)在其获得页1997年普利策奖的著作《枪炮、病菌与钢铁:
人类社会的命运》(GunsGermsandSteel:TheFatesofHumanSocieties)中提出:“不同民族的历史遵循不同的道路前进，其原因是民族环境的差异，而不是民族自身在生物学上的差异。”起作用的--以及导致世界以欧亚人占优势的--环境差异是欧亚大陆有丰富的适合驯化的动植物可资利用，东西向延展的陆地使动物、粮食作物和技术的长距离传播成为可能。其他大陆都不具备这两方面的任一种优势。

粮食生产是问题的关键。虽然冰期结束后世界上若干地区分别发展了农业，但是中东地区的居民有幸拥有众多适合种植的植物，包括8种最重要的禾本作物中的6种，其中有小麦品种的原型。这些植物很适合栽种、生长迅速、营养价值高、能够支持大量人口。欧亚大陆还有丰富的能被驯化的大型动物--包括牛、羊、猪和马，进一步刺激了人口增长。此外，由于同动物亲密接触，欧亚人也感染了后来被证明对其他大陆居民极具破坏性的各种流行病，与此同时形成了他们自己对那些疾病的免疫性。

像中东这样的文化源地所开发的粮食生产技术很容易沿着欧亚大陆无垠的东西轴线扩散，该大陆宽广地域上大体相似的气候适合培育同样的农作物组合，从西班牙到中国都能看到同样的家畜。欧亚大陆的巨大面积还意味着数量众多的不同民族，每个民族都具有开发新技术的能力并将新技术扩散到远方。人口增长、农业生产力和富有创造力的头脑产生了各种文明--中央政府、城市、劳动分工、纺织、制陶、文字、算术、长途贸易、金属加工，最后是四处征战的欧亚人带到其他大陆的枪炮。

世界上没有哪个地区享有欧亚大陆那样的环境优势以及因之而来的人口与技术优势。非洲或美洲开发的几种粮食作物，不能穿越这两个南北向办延伸大陆的气候和生态屏障而有效扩散。撒哈拉
以南的非洲和澳大利亚，由于大自然的意外事件或先民对大型动物的捕猎，没有产生家畜，而美
洲只驯化了美洲驼。其他地方缺乏欧亚大陆的粮食基地和便捷的纬向运动，人口规模停留在较小
水平，比较孤立，总体上创造性不够。15世纪开始的大发现和殖民之旅，证明欧亚人的优势无可阻挡。其他大陆的居民对许多疾病缺乏抗性，没有马匹、甲胄、火器和像征服者那样的组织，只能迅即臣服、受制于人--按照戴蒙德的观点，不是由于天生自卑，而是因为限制或延缓其发展前景的地理劣势。
