  attribute/ascribe/owe......to......

● attribute …… to……“把……归因于”、“把……归咎于”，指客观地将

 某事归于某人或某物， 常用结构是：

               attribute…… to ……   （主语多为人）

               be attributed to ……   （主语多为某事）

 

   1）The teacher attributes the student’s poor comprehension to the lack of intelligence.

      老师把这位学生理解能力差归因于缺乏智力。

   2）He attributes his great age to carefully planned diet and good living environment.

     他把他的高寿归因于精心安排的饮食和良好的生活环境。

   3）We attribute Edison’s success to his intelligence and hard work.

     我们把爱迪生的成就归功于他他的聪明才智和辛勤劳动。

 

   4）It is generally agreed that fluctuations in birth rate are attributed to a number of economic factors.

     人们普遍认为出生率的波动归结于诸多经济因素。

   5）France’s bad luck at the World Cup should partly be attributed to the disharmony inside the team.

     法国队在世界杯的失利部分要归咎于球队内部的不合。

   6）The sales decline can be attributed to customer dissatisfaction with our products’ prices and quality.

     销售量的下降可归咎于顾客对我们产品的价格和质量的不满，

 

● ascribe …… to ……也可表示“把……归因于”、“把……归咎于”， 与

  attribute …… to ……的区别在于：ascribe 指凭猜想推断，强调主观臆

  断，所作的推断不如attribute确定。

 

   1）It is wrong to ascribe all that have happened to the manager’s fault.

     把所发生的一切都归咎于经理的过失是是错误的。

  2）When studying the phenomenon,people usually ascribe it to the external environment, human factors and even uncontrollable destiny.

     人们在研究这种现象时, 一般将它归结于外在环境 和人为因素，甚至归结于不可驾驭

     的命运。

  3）You have ascribed this growth to the positive factors. But don’t you think it may have down sides?

     你将它的成长都归于正面因素，难道你没有考虑到这种成长也可能产生消极的方面吗？。

 

●  owe …… to……“把……归功于”、“把……归因于”，与attribute

   …… to ……的区别有两点：1）只用主动形式，不用被动形式，句子主语是

  “人”，指某人将某事归因（功）于某人或某物；2）多用于表示归因（功）于

   好的方面（褒义）。

 

    1）If I have improved in any way, I owe it all to you.

      如果我在某一方面有所进步，那应归功于你。

   2）He owes his great success in his research work to the guidance of his tutor.

      他把他在研究工作的巨大成功归功于他的导师的指导。

   3）All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.I remember my mother’s prayers and they have always followed me. They have clung to me all

       my life.    —Abraham Lincoln

      无论我现在怎么样，还是希望以后会怎么样，都应当归功于我天使一般的母亲。我记得

   4）We owe the spectacular tidal bore at the mouthy of Qiantang River to the special funnel-shaped estuary of the Gulf of Hangzhou.

      我们把钱塘江潮壮观的成因归结于是由于钱塘江喇叭形的入海口造成的。

 

注：偶尔句子主语也可是“物”。

   1）Some of the most important concepts in physics owe their success to these mathematical systems.

      物理学中的一些最重要的概念的成功要归功于数学系统。
