How dose SMI-S work?

SMI-S use standard XML based communication methods to facilitate exchange between the client application, the SMI-S provider, and the storage device.

1. The SMI-S client sends management request to the CIM server. In an EMC environment, the CIM server and the SMI-S provider components are both include in the EMC SMI-S provider. (support.emc.com上有这个包安装，目前已经有LINUX和WINODWS平台的版本。)

2. The CIM Server receives these management requests from the client and communicates with the SMI-S provider. （CIM是什么？会有一个专门的话题来讨论。读者可以先暂认为他是一个配置模型）

3. In turn the provider communicates with the storage device using native commands. The provider translates the CIM-XML protocol originating from the CIM Client/CIM Server into commands understood by the storage platform. Upon the completion of a command (4), a confirmation message is returned to the provider (5), then to the server (6), and finally to the client (7).

CIM接受到的是XML的请求，然后它会把这个消息给到Provider，然后Provider会吧这个信息翻译成存储可以理解的COMMADN。因此，这里就有一个问题了，不同厂商会有不同的COMMAND，因此，不同厂商都会有自己的agent来做这个事情。后续会讨论到这个话题。
