About Github

Github is a web-based hosting service for software development projects that use Git Revision Control system. Github offers both paid plans for private repositories and free accounts for open source projects. As of May 2011, Github was the most popular open source code repository site.

Ebay use an Enterprise Github Edition internally. Currently, most of the projects(PD and internal) inside Ebay are hosted to github.corp.ebay.com. Besides, any user could have his own projects/fork on github.

 

Steps to Create a Github project

 

1. Login to github with your account.
2. There will be an icon with tooltip "Create a New Repo" on the right-up besides user name.
3. Click the icon and you will go into the repository creation page.

    4. Specify the project's repository name like(Testing_Repository), Fill the description and config the Public or Private for the repository.

    5. Click Create repository and there will create a rough repository.

    6. Create a new repository on the command line(open your Git Batch)

        1)  mkdir testing_repo

        2) cd testing_repo

        3) git init

        4) touch test.txt

        5) git add test.txt

        6) git commit -m'first commit'

        7) git remote add origin git@github.com:swang6/Testing_Repository.git

        8) git push -u origin master

 

      7. After the former steps, the repository should be:

      8.  To add somebody else as collaborator, click the "Admin" button on the repository home page. See below image. Add the other guy's github account to the collaborator list.

 

 

 

Fork the project to Organization

 Create a organization
1) Click icon Account Settings on the right-top

2) Click Organizations and Create a new Organization

 

3) Specify Organization name and Billing Email and click "Create Organization".
4) Invite your team members to the organization: Specify user and Click "Add".

 

5) After these steps, there should be a new organization.
6) Back up to the main page of "Testing_Repository" created before, and click "Fork" icon.

 

 

  7) Click "Fork to TestOrganization(organization)" Created before.
