Does all faculty should be require to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach in order to improve the quality instruction at the college and university level as the statement suggests? Admittedly, the faculty will learn a lot of experience relevant to the courses they teach if they work outside the pure academic world. However, I fundamentally disagree with the statement because it is unwarranted to expand this broad assertion to the entire faculty in the college. Therefore, my contention toward this opinion is that it is necessary to inspire the researchers concerning the practical discipline to spend time outside the academic world, while, for those who work in the pure theoretical field, it is meaningless to compel them to gain the experience in the practical word.

First and foremost, there is no denying the fact that working experience in industry is very necessary for professors in some fields such as computer science and engineering. For the teacher, they can know how to transfer their research result to the industry product and combine the theory with the engineering. For instance, without the combination of the research of faculty and market, a couple of famous IT company such as Google, Facebook, and Microsoft will never come to the world and change thousands of peoples’ life. For the students, they can learn the new trend of the technology from their professors. Some colleges hire some engineers of these famous companies to get lecture to their students because they believe the importance of the real working experience in industry for the students. Students also want some experience outside the academic word to check whether what they have learn will really work in the industry environment.

Despite the merits of the speaker’s claim, however, I disagree with the statement that all faculties should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach in virtue of the factors in two respects. Firstly, for some faculties there are no jobs that match their research field. As a typical example, some professors who do research in some pure theoretical field such as math, physics, chemistry and so on will find it hard to get a job outside the academic world in professions relevant to the course they teach. For them, work as a faculty is already an ideal position for all life long. Secondly, doing some job such as administration of various affairs in company is a waste of time for the faculties. If they devote themselves to research and make some great innovation in their filed, they will find they make the same time more valuable. (举一个恰如其分的例子是一个挑战) On the contrary, if they spend all the time doing the administration and never drip into research , they will fail to meet the basic demand for a good faculty.

From analysis made above, I concede that it is necessary to inspire the researchers concerning the practical discipline to spend time outside the academic world, while, it is meaningless to compel them to gain the experience in the practical word for the academician who do research in some pure theoretical field. Every thing including working outside the academic world is like a double-edged sword. For different types of professors, they should have different choices. Aside from this, as a matter of fact, different disciplines have different special characteristic for a better education. What we can do is put enough attention to the difference and let all faculty do as the Objective laws of their research field to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level.
