Internet Explorer Script Error

may encounter difficulties running client-side scripts from a site and what you then have is an Internet Explorer Script Error. The user may receive messages similar to this:

“Problems with this Web page might prevent it from being displayed properly or functioning properly”.

If you click on “Show Details” option, the following details may appear:

Error: Object doesn't support this property or method

You may sometimes get the message: “A Runtime Error has occurred. Do you wish to debug?”

The problem may occur because the HTML source code fails to work with client-side scripts like JavaScript or Visual Basic.

The following measures may be employed to resolve the problem.

Disable Script Debugging and Error Notifications

Go to the “Advanced” tab in the Internet Explorer properties. Under the “Browsing” node, make sure that the checkboxes for “Disable Script Debugging” (there are two of these) are checked and the checkbox “Display a notification about every script error” is unchecked.

These options are usually enabled by web developers to use for testing purposes. A casual user need not be concerned with them.

Open the Web Page from another Computer

Here, you are testing whether the problem is emanating from the browser that you are using, the user file that you are using, or even the account. If the script errors persists, then that could indicate a problem in the way the web page is written. The only way to resolve this is contacting the site administrator and reporting the problem, hoping that there will be a response.

If on the other hand the problem does not persist when you use another computer and browser, then the problem could be originating from the user’s profile.

Unblock Active Scripting, ActiveX and JavaScript

This is done by verifying that neither Internet Explorer nor some other installed program in your computer is blocking Active Scripting and JavaScript. On Internet Explorer, these scripts are turned off at the high security level. Unblocking may be done by resetting Internet Explorer by taking the following steps.

  • Start Internet Explorer.
  • Go to the “Tools” menu and click on “Internet Properties”.
  • Go to the “Internet Options” dialogue box and click on “Security”.
  • Click on “Default Level”.
  • Finish the process by clicking “OK”.

You should also ensure that the firewall or any anti-malware installed on the computer is not set to block the scripts. Each of these applications has its own documentation and you can use that to determine the best way to unblock the scripts.

Remove all Temporary Internet Files

This method works sometimes, and may be accomplished by following these instructions.

  • Start Internet Explorer.
  • Go to the ‘Tools” menu and select “Internet Options”.
  • Go to the “General” tab, click on “Temporary Internet Files”, and
  • then click “Settings”.
  • Click on “Delete Files”, and then click “OK”.
  • Click on “Delete Cookies” and then click “OK”.
  • Under the “Clear History” tab, click “Clear History” and then click “OK”.

Repair/Update the Scripting Engine

If you are well versed with computers you might want to try to repair the script engines for Internet Explorer for Windows 98 and 98 Second Edition, the Millennium Edition and Windows NT 4.0. You may also update the scripting engine as well. Microsoft Corporation provides online resources on how you can accomplish all this.
