In the present day, universities are playing significant roles in our society and there has been much discussion revolving around what is the true function of a university.
Some people assert that universities should offer knowledge and skills based on what the students require in their future jobs,
while others argue that universities only need to concentrate on knowledge itself without caring about employment problems.
Convincing argument can be made that it is good for both universities and graduates if a university afford knowledge that will benefit its graduates in employment.
To start with, without enough job opportunities created today, competition is increasingly stiff. Therefore, if armed with proper skilled that is necessary in a job,
it would be easier for a graduate to have enough reasons to convince an employer to offer him or her a position.
As a result, employment rates would be raised on some extent, which, accordingly, will contribute to the stability and development of the society.
Moreover, universities would win more popularity and reputation due to such positive employment, and more resources would choose them for studying.
Most importantly, it is going to be easier and less time-consuming for employers to recruit new staff.
As for me, universities offering subjects on the basis of the demand of employer would kill three birds with one stone.
On the other side of the debate, many individuals insist that knowledge should be taught for its own sake.
The main reason for their view is obviously that they start from the point that universities should be responsible for all around development of a student.
To fulfill this goal, diverse subjects should be provided to them, so that they can gain more techniques in different fields, such as sport, music, etc..
In a long term, doing this can help students build more wholesome and simulating life rather than only focusing on the career development.
After all, work is only part of our lives.
At the end, I must say, since both career development and personal life are of importance for graduates, universities should work out their own strategies on what should be taught will help their students to start whole new life after graduation.
