When installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 3 (AMD64/EM64T), Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 4 (AMD64/EM64T), or SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 Service Pack 3 (AMD64/EM64T) on a ProLiant DL585 G2 server, a kernel panic similar to the following may occur:

. . MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC failed.
timer doesn't work through the IO-APIC - disabling NMI Watchdog!
Kernel panic - not syncing: IO-APIC + timer doesn't work! Try using the 'noapic' kernel parameter

Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason 20
Dazed and confused, but trying to continue
Do you have a strange power saving mode enabled?

Note: Even if the installation is successful, the above messages will be displayed in the /var/log/messages file or dmesg output.

These messages occur because the kernel ignores the Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) timer override for the system timer.

SCOPE
Any ProLiant DL585 G2 server or ProLiant BL685c server blade attempting an installation of any of the following versions of Linux:

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 3 (AMD64/EM64T)
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 4 (AMD64/EM64T)
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 Service Pack 3 (AMD64/EM64T)

RESOLUTION
Enable the Linux x86_64 HPET Option in RBSU (ROM-Based Setup Utility) for the Linux versions listed in the scope section above by performing the following:

Press the F9 key during POST to access ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU).
Select Advanced Options.
Select Linux x86_64 HPET Option, and change the setting to "Enabled."
Press the F10 key to exit RBSU. The server will restart automatically.

Note: The above instructions should be followed for all modes of installation: Manual, Rapid Deployment Pack (RDP), Network (NFS), Scripted or any other.
