Gear pumps use a gear meshing system to move fluid. Due to the mechanism involved, gear pumps are qualified as positive displacement pumps. Each time the gear in the gear pump is rotated, the same amount of fluid is produced.

Due to their design, gear pumps are commonly used to deliver high viscosity fluids, particularly in the chemical industry.

The gear pump has two gears that are separated on the intake side of the pump. This creates a partial vacuum that creates suction and draws liquid into the pump. The gear then passes fluid through the pump and out from the other side to the outlet. The fluid is displaced by the rotation of the gears. Due to the direction and position of the gear, fluid can only flow from the intake side to the outlet side.
