Translation: This message perplexes novices because it seems to contradict itself—if the computer is out of memory, how can you save the document? In reality this highlights the difference between the computer’s physical RAM, which is used to run programs and store files that you open for editing, and the computer’s storage devices (such as hard drives, where it permanently stores data that you save).

Solution: Do as the message says and save the open file immediately, so it is stored on your computer’s hard drive or another storage device. To continue working, try shutting down as many programs as possible that are running in the background, as they consume RAM that could be allocated to the file you are working on. If that is impossible and the file you’re editing is simply too large to fit within your computer’s RAM, consider adding more memory by adding extra RAM chips or replacing existing modules with higher-capacity ones. Contact your PC’s manufacturer or read the documentation that came with the system to determine what type of memory it requires, as numerous varieties are available. This error can also be caused by a bug in Microsoft Office 2003.
